The story of a man who became a neurosurgeon though he dreamt of becoming a cook, and a woman who became a cook because of him. -Wikipedia
CHOCOLATE is more than a series that would be loved by foodies. Just like what Forest Gump quipped, “My mom always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.”

Chocolate " was a good combination of food, travel and melodrama. The story had a nice amount of romance, drama and family dynamics. The tragedy was all over it, not only in the background stories of the two leads, but with the actual side stories of the hospice as well. Some of the characters were annoying though. - imdb

One reviewer mentioned that the movie started with the ending, so it's kind of predictable that way.  The questions are:  What is the start of their story?  What happened in between?  How do they separate?  How do they find each other again?  Is the story only about Moon Cha-yeong and Lee Kang? How come there are five(5) main characters?  What are the roles of the other three?

WHY DID I WATCH THIS SERIES?

Immediately after watching PASTA this was recommended to us(my mom and me) by Netflix.  Mom and I are foodies.  Almost everything about cooking I've learned from my mother, but she's such a perfectionist, so I do not want to cook with her.  I would rather be alone in the kitchen(LOL...I love my mom, mayawyaw lang, so nakakastress).

We were hooked from the first episode.  There were flashbacks, but they weren't confusing at all.  There were scenes in the series that would make you forget that the title is Chocolate, but moments later, you would remember why.

The actors are very versatile.   Jang Seung-jo, the man who plays Lee Joon, was so hateful in MY SON-IN-LAW'S WOMAN(MARRYING MY DAUGHTER TWICE), but here he has endearing qualities.  I am currently watching him in tvN's ENCOUNTER(2018) and I must say he is definitely NOT typecast, although he SEEMS to be.  Do I make sense at all?

This series' OTP, Lee Kang(Yoon Kye-sang) and Moon Cha-yeong(Ha Ji-won). meet when they were children.  It was because of Lee Kang's generosity that is why Moon Cha-yeong decided to be a chef.  She was not exactly poor, but her mom was making her audition for this and that, so she wasn't allowed to eat much so that she wouldn't be fat.  When she reached the small restaurant in Wando Island where she and her family were having a vacation, she was famished that she ate like a horse.

Although we love the series as a whole(story, acting, scenery, et cetera), there were times we wish it were more fast paced, but there were also scenes that seemed rushed to us.

Mom and I loved the side stories and the battle of emotions in the hospital, hospice, and so much more.  We are also glad that the rivaling cousins weren't really fighting over Moon Cha-yeong.  They had many inner demons and other matters to fight about only to realize at the end of the day that they have nothing to fight about.  Is that a spoiler?  Not really.

Well, before I do give spoilers I must end it here.

First Impressions: All The Different Flavors That  Made “Chocolate” A Solid Premiere

CAST:

Main

  • Yoon Kye-sang as Lee Kang. (the first time I "met" this actor was in MY NINETEEN YEAR OLD SISTER-IN-LAW.  Even then he was already very impressive)
  • Ha Ji-won as Moon Cha-yeong. (she is one of my favorite actors/actresses...she is like a chameleon)
  • Jang Seung-jo(this is the second time to see him this year and I am currently watching a third one---he's good!) as Lee Joon, Lee Kang's cousin.  The elders seem to be making them rivals, so they become rivals while growing up.  Later on, they would learn to respect one another.  How?
  • Teo Yoo(it's my first time to "meet" this actor) as Kwon Min-seong.  He plays the best of friend of Lee Kang who becomes Moon Cha-Yeong's boyfriend.
  • Min Jin-woong(it's also the my first time to "meet" him) as Moon Tae-hyun.  He is Moon Cha-yeong's twin brother, but she treats him like a foolish younger brother.
